His endorsement was always strategic, to support Republican leaders at the local level and dissuade third-party challenges next year.

The best way to dissuade third-party challenges from conservatives is to avoid nominating and/or backing candidates who make conservatives vomit at the mere sight of them. Also: Dan Riehl.
