What happened back in the 1970s is exactly the same thing which has happened again 30 years later. America’s psycho-sexual insanity was provoked by the Polanski affair the way a bull is provoked by a red flag. All the Christers and the wowsers began howling for Polanski’s blood, writing misleading hysterical jeremiads about drugging and raping poor little 13 year old maidens, and the next thing you knew, Judge Rittenband, who was sensitive to public opinion, expressed the intention of throwing out Polanski’s plea bargain, while keeping his guilty plea. Facing an exemplary penalty, Polanski wisely fled into exile.

My libertarian take: no matter what the foreplay or byplay, the moment she said no, the moment she said stop, it became the immoral initiation of force, it became child rape, and if she had shot the sonofabitch right between the eyes - and then cut off his balls and rammed them down his throat - she’d have been fully justified to do so.

I really do love how the Swiss have the ironic sense to deny the child rapist bail on the grounds that he poses a flight risk. Looks like he’ll spend more time in jail fighting extradition than he would have if he’d stuck around and take his lumps.

There’s a reason for such a thing as “statutory” rape and such a concept as age of consent. One can be too young to offer informed consent.

Regardless of anything else - a pandering mother, what the judge said/intended, the passage of 32 years, the girl’s prior history (whether alleged or real), drugs/alcohol being involved, the arguable “value” of Polanski as an “artist” - this, for me, is the essence, the hard, irreducible core of the matter.
One more thing: If he was, hypothetically, a no-name low-grade con artist who, subsequent to evading a short-term jail sentence, had been “hiding in plain sight” - or maybe hanging out in Canada - for 32 years, and was picked up on a fugitive warrant, would we even be having this discussion?
