(CNN) — Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee has a warning for Sarah Palin: Don’t abandon the Republican Party.
The former presidential candidate and potential future White House rival of Palin’s said Tuesday he’s concerned about speculation the Alaska governor may leave the GOP to become an independent.
“I hope she remains — let me be real clear — a part of the Republican Party,” Huckabee told FOX News. “I’m a little concerned when I hear her say that she may sort of branch out and go third party or go independent. That would be a big mistake because we need to rebuild the Republican Party, not abandon it.”
Hmmm. I actually agree with Huckabee here. While it is conceivable that Palin could cobble together a credible Perot-style run as an Indy, that same support, properly channeled, could give her effective control of the GOP, and permit her to renovate that pile of rubble as a new home for conservative principles.
UPDATE: Welcome, Instapundit readers!

Well, when my gal Sarah ends up leading the GOP, will you throw your weight behind her?
Tell you what, Huckabee, let’s start reforming the Republican Party by throwing your sorry ass out! All you are is a modern day liberal with a socially conservative agenda.
I have always understood why Palin scared the Democrats, but never really understood why she scared the Republicans!
This seems sort of like James Taggart’s hatred of Dagney, and his panic when she finally decides to leave!
If I were anyone thinking of trying to gain control of the GOP from establishment Republicans, I’d have to come up with a way to deal with their subsequent inevitable and unceasing attempts at sabotage of anything I tried to do.
An independent effort would not have that problem. Given the treatment Palin has endured at the hands of the establishment GOP, I’m sure that’s one of the considerations on her mind.
The Republican base has been at war with the GOP establishment since at least the sixties (ie, all my life).
At what point do you say enough?
Three years ago I said enough is enough.
The GOP is dead to me. I hope Palin goes independent.
The GOP establishment doesn’t like Palin because of what she did to the GOP establishment in Alaska. Cleaning up that cesspool of corruption created a lot of enemies. Note that she brought attention to the corruption by resigning her position on the Alaska Oil and Gas commission. She relied on a coalition of Democrats and renegade Republicans to govern. After she got the VP nod, the Democrats got orders from Chicago to hinder her in every way possible.
We get dozens of GOP requests for donations every day. We now have a standard response for them:
“To: The Republican Party, The National Republican Senatorial Committee, et al.,
I am one of millions who have been out in the streets opposing the radical Progressive agenda of the new administration, Congress, and the mainstream media, while the RNC et al., has been talking talking talking about it. A few of our elected officials have been doing a great job, but many more “conservatives” have betrayed us and our values.
I have been returning every GOP solicitation with “Not one red cent” scribbled on the return form, noting the latest spineless cave-in in Congress. (Last week’s immigration amendments, all good ones, are still vulnerable to getting killed in the Conference Committee, as happened last February.) The vote in the House on Cap and Trade was more proof of a Congress NOT listening to its constituents. The eight GOP turncoats who voted in favor of Cap and Trade have just cost the Republican party millions of dollars in donations. The “Not one red cent” is the attitude I am hearing over and over again in my interaction with the grassroots. The GOP is NOT receiving tens of thousands of dollars from people like me who are, instead, directing their contributions to Sarah PAC, or to organizations such as The Conservative Union and The National Conservative Campaign Fund. The conservative base will no longer donate funds that end up going to the re-election coffers of Republicans who vote with the left, or like Specter, switch parties. And the eight GOP representatives who voted YES on Cap and Trade enabled Democrats up for re-election in 2010 to disingenuously vote No. For the GOP, it seems to be business as usual. Not for me.
Every time a solicitor for one of the Republican fund-raising groups phones me, I explain that the GOP has abandoned its conservative values. Forget the big tent. Here’s the bottom line. QUESTION: In what 24-hour period during the last 12 months did the GOP receive the most in contributed dollars? ANSWER: In the 24-hour period after Sarah Palin’s candidacy for VP was announced. What more do you need to know?
You can no longer COUNT ON conservatives like me to vote for the candidate with the [R] after his/her name. Because with the GOP serving up Democrat-Lite, either way, America loses. If I have to “throw away” my vote to protest the GOP’s abandonment of core values, I will do so. You cannot take my vote for granted any more.
Here is what I want. Reform the GOP mission/policy based on a return to conservative values: small government, low taxes, personal responsibility. Work with Blue Dogs to kill Cap and Trade and nationalized health care; reverse the bail-outs, etc. Impose conservative values by withholding ALL financing — whether RNC, NRCC, NRSC, etc.– from any “Republican” who votes (or has voted) with the left on key legislation or nominees. Make it known to the Minority Leaders in the House and Senate that it is up to them to demand transparency and accountability.
If you do not take such decisive action, the ones who will end up being punished for the bad behavior of, e.g., the eight on Cap and Trade, will be the other 168 who voted against it. Moreover, inaction will result in a perpetuation of this destructive behavior which will continue to diminish the party’s credibility and thereby its ability to raise funds. Take advantage of the conservative grass roots movement now to turn the party around. Forget the country club Republicans. This country needs to return to its founding values —or there will be no more America as we know it. We are running out of time.
Finally, we all know the electoral process is all but broken. The GOP, especially at the state level, needs to DO whatever it takes to eliminate open-primaries in states such as Florida, and New York. What point is there in voting for an unqualified GOP presidential candidate who has been selected by subversive progressives in a few states? State GOPs need to reform the electoral apparatus, e.g., REQUIRE citizenship checks, REQUIRE cross-checks on data bases to eliminate duplicate voting, etc. All states should be under intense GOP pressure to clean up voter fraud. The loose rules on absentee ballots, advance voting, and the like should be reversed; these “reforms” serve only to make it easier to game the system.
Some of us are no longer asleep at the switch. We will be watching closely as we head into 2010. We probably won’t get a second chance to stop the Marxification of this country. Go back to conservative values and let the others in bigger tents follow. And until there’s a change in the GOP, you won’t get a dime, or a vote, from me.”
We give our money to SarahPAC and a few select GOP candidates.
Donating to SarahPAC isn’t a bad idea. Nothing will give her clout with the movers and shakers like a half-billion dollar war chest.
Even the Mostly Socialist Media tends to salivate over the richest candidates. “Oh, look, he’s/she’s got the most money, and is therefore the front runner!”
SarahPAC begging page here.
I think you are correct. If Palin stumps for (and raises gobs of cash for) conservative candidates, she will gain a lot of credibility. When almost all of those candidates beat expectations, and most of them actually get elected, her credibility goes up even more. If she backs a few independents, and even a Democrat or two, it should cause a buying spree of underwear in the DC/New York phalanx of Republicans. If they don’t let her have the party, she may just wrench it out of their hands. Or, take her ball and go home (go independent).
Control of the GOP? Right now that’s like being named captain of the Titanic! Talk about a booby-prize! “Effective control” simply means that she will be a target for all of the leftists that are running the GOP right now. And if by some miracle she won the Presidency, she would be battling the GOP establishment as well as Democrats. Why not let the GOP leftists be the target for a change, until most all of them are out of office, in jail, or both?
Rather than run for President (either as an independent or a Republican), Palin could perform a better service for the country in working to defeat the socialists that have seized control of the GOP.
I nominate Kay Bailey Hutchison as her first target. As a resident of Texas I have watched Kay! veer more and more sharply to the left as her career has dragged on. She plans to run a left-of-center campaign for Texas Governor that emphasizes snagging Federal handouts, government-run health care (probably, if my reading of the Texas political tea leaves is worth anything), pushing open borders, and (of course) “bipartisanship”.
Way to go, Pat!!! When Sarah’s speech was shown on tv, I heard it said that nobody had seen a television given such a standing ovation. I can well believe that she brought in more $$$ than anyone else. I feared Obama, but I wasn’t so hot for McCain either. I was thrilled by the Pailin/McCain ticket.
Even if an Indipendant Pailin ticket had no chance, I would “throw away” my vote to support her. Getting a RINO would be no better than re-electing Obama. Voting for honorable “change” would have more moral value than supporting a RINO!!!
Just a side note: Florida does not have open primaries. You must register with a party at least 30 days before the primary to vote in it. However, we do have a bunch of snucking fowbirds who get away with double voting — and don’t even think there’s anything wrong with it. “I live six months of the year in both places; why shouldn’t I get to vote in both?”
Uh…because owning two homes doesn’t give you two votes for President?
You wonder why FL2000 was close, or why FL2008 when blue? Noo Yawkers voting twice. And the Orlando leech and likeminded idiots who said “Obama’s gonna pay my mortgage”.
Why on earth not? If they paid for two houses and, more importantly, are paying taxes on two houses, they’re contributing twice as much to society as someone who owns only one house. Why shouldn’t their contribution be rewarded with an extra vote?
Pat, your letter as response to GOP beggings is phenomenal and I may have to “steal” it to use myself. May I? It says everything I have been trying to tell them and better. Right on!
BTW, how is NY an open primary state? How is that possible when I was unaffiliated and just registered Republican, and cannot vote on any primary in Sept.? Yes, you can vote in the primary and then switch before the general. Also, I understand the NY-FL Axis of Evil part of the voting fraud. (And yes, SteveF, multiple votes for owning multiple homes is…hmm, how shall I put this…ILLEGAL AND INSANE!!!!)
Huckabee: “…we need to rebuild the Republican Party, not abandon it.”
Barb, independent voter who voted Republican during the heady “Contract With America” days and has since grown increasingly disillusioned and cold: “Why?”
Pat, I stole your letter and I’m sending it to my county, state and the national Republican party. While I’m a moderate Republican (i’m prochoice), I agree with you on pretty much everything else.
2 years ago, I started writing “NOT ONE DIME” on the stuff they were sending me.

Perhaps due to an overwhelming number of Ivy-degreed Harvard graduates working overtime to impose their Social Justice law which protects theft, envy, pride, anger.
And, the religious institutions are no different from the Ivy-degreed, they too lecture Sunday morning sermons about the necessity of stealing from neighbors, lying to God about protecting the innocent, cheating Justice by encouraging illegal activity; all for the cause of serving Social Justice.
Politicians pander for votes, they know want Americans want to hear, lots of shiny happy talk; it’s the American people who are responsible for demanding the shiny happy goodies, politicians simply provide their wishes.
Lastly, my gender is the most pathetic of all; down on their knees slobbering all over the Smooth-Talker-in-Cheif who promised them heaven but is delivering them hell.
My gender is so selfish, silly and stupid that they are terrified that Gov Palin will take away all their toys.
I am Woman hear me roar, I hate Feminism and what it has done to my gender.
Pat, I just got finished sending your letter to the Baltimore County Republican party, the State of Maryland Party and the RNC….great letter thanks
I hope she doesn’t compromise with the soulless, hollow shell of the Republican Party. I stopped believing the bullshit 15 years ago, now I won’t even vote for them.
The Republicans believe in nothing. I’d rather watch the Democrats bankrupt the nation so we can start over again.
Not one cent for the GOP.
And not one bite for SteveF–(are you losing your touch?)
SteveF, theres something wrong with your thinking if you think someone with 2 houses get 2 votes. Bill Gates alone can elect anyone he wants, in fact, he could vote himself into office
People, you are free to use our letter.
However, this sentence is misleading. “The GOP, especially at the state level, needs to DO whatever it takes to eliminate open-primaries in states such as Florida, and New York.” New York and Florida have closed primaries although voters can change affiliation fairly easily. I’d replace the sentence by “The GOP needs to change the winner-take-all primary rules in large, liberal states like New York and California. It gives those states too much influence in the selection of the GOP presidential candidate.”
