Re: Enemies of Straw - Ramesh Ponnuru - The Corner on National Review Online
The related notions that Obama has too much on his plate, that he is overloading the political system, and that he is spending too little time on the economy and too much on health and the environment are staples of centrist and center-right commentary about the president, and have been for months.
Ramesh, I spit on your “centrist and center-right.”
“Center-right” is currently located on the ideological scale about where “liberal” resided fifty years ago, thanks to faux-conservative surrender artists like yourself. You religious so-cons disgust me. You’d give up every freedom we have, if you could get abortion banned in exchange.
To hell with you and your “center-right.”

I would disagree with your sweeping generalization here, since I’m one of those religious so-cons of whom you speak. You could seek for evidence that I’ve ever favored such efforts and you would fail. We already had a pro-life nanny statist GOP guy as president in Bush and Huckabee was another such candidate, who I vehemently opposed. Based on my circle of friends and acquaintances- and I realize that any such evidence is anecdotal- I would say that there are a pretty sizable number of of people like me.
Do I oppose abortion? Sure, but even if Roe were overturned tomorrow, it would be legal in around 37 states or so and the other 13 would soon follow, with restrictions differing from state to state. Frankly, I’d be okay with the issue being returned to the states, due to my belief in federalism, regardless of the final outcome.
I will grant you that there are a not insignificant number of religious so-cons who do fit your description. I’m related to some. However, as the leviathan state continues to engulf pretty much everything, more and more are coming around to my way of thinking and discarding the notion that “banning” abortions is worthy any price. It’s not much, but it’s progress in my opinion.
Yes, and it is to them I address myself. I’d think that would be clear from the rest of what I wrote. And I do number Ramesh Ponnoru and a lot of the other squishy Catholic “conservatives” at NRO among them.
Further, there are things worse than abortion, and one of them is making sure babies are born into a life of endless tyranny.
You’d think that that would be obvious to most people. Sadly, you’d be wrong.
