GovTrack: H.R. 1444: Text of Legislation, Introduced in House
(a) General Purpose- The purpose of the Commission is to gather and analyze information in order to make recommendations to Congress to–
…
(5) The effect on the Nation, on those who serve, and on the families of those who serve, if all individuals in the United States were expected to perform national service or were required to perform a certain amount of national service.
(6) Whether a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people could be developed, and how such a requirement could be implemented in a manner that would strengthen the social fabric of the Nation and overcome civic challenges by bringing together people from diverse economic, ethnic, and educational backgrounds.
Here’s the sort of mandatory future the Reichsfuhrer and all the little Fuhrers on the left have in mind for you and your kids.
Mandatory “service.” Two hundred years ago, at least they were honest, and called such what it actually was: Slavery. (via David Beatty and Michelle Malkin - thanks!)

Our kids won’t be FORCED to do “voluntary” service… but they they refuse, they’ll just find it more difficult to get jobs, or get drivers’ licenses, or get credit approval, or be able to work in government.
No coercion there, no sirree.
… or high school diplomas or college diplomas from any institution which receives government money. Those, plus availability of student loans, will be the entry point.
Exactly. This whole idea should be offensive to any library minded individual.
Yes, first they came for the kids in the libraries….
For a few years I supervised VISTA and Americorp volunteers. I don’t quite see the ‘forced’ part of this thread, although I admit is one possibility. If we ever reinstituted the draft, there would have to be some place to put the leftist, COs and other draft dodger types. It is also a way to give the same educational benefits to non-military youth.
My experience suggests that most of that most of the volunteer service provided no lasting change other than the ‘feeling good’ of the volunteers.
Don’t worry, be happy, the cold chill you feel is just a Draft.
Haverwilde, did you entirely miss the word “mandatory” in the proposed legislation?
Was there anything about the programs you managed that included a requirement for mandatory national service?
Finally, “mandatory” means “forced.” You do understand that part, right?
Okay, I see what you are referring to. It is well hidden after all the verbage on ‘volunteerism.’
Sorry about the oversight.
Haverwilde, that’s the way they always do it: A couple of words buried in the middle of acres of boilerplate, hidden “in plain view,” as it were.
They restarted the welfare state with less than a sentence in Obama’s first bailout bill, remember.
