MORE BIG SALES EVERYWHERE. That’s happening all over. It’s like Black Friday II.
What’s interesting are the comments at the cite Glenn links. Almost everybody is griping that the sales are phony, the big markdowns are only on junk, and even the inventory of junk is minuscule.
I’ve cruised around some of the online joints like amazon, newegg, and the big computer shops, and haven’t noticed much in the way of savings on anything I’d actually want to buy, either.
You begin to see significant deflation when people stop buying stuff. That usually occurs for one of two reasons: either folks have less money to spend, or they have money to spend, but are holding on to it in anticipation of lower prices.
I suspect both factors are now at work.

A “store closing sale” at a local Zale’s for over 6 months and a 70% off gold jewelry sale at the local Kmart that ends for 2 weeks then restarts a week before Valentines Day and my favorite the “Bankruptcy Liquidation Sale” at a furniture store that lasted at least 5 years(it was going on when I got to the area and was still going when I left).
Probably at 70% of the sales at any given time.
Bill, I’ve noticed that the things I want to buy are never on sale unless I don’t have the money to spare.
I’ve been mining the home improvement section. Some of the hand and power tools at amazon are at a pretty good price.
