It’s becoming apparent that Obama did learn at least one thing from Carter and Clinton, and that’s that two-term Democrat Presidents govern from the center-left, not the far left.
I think what he really learned is that if you want to govern, you don’t throw away solid congressional majorities - and you swathe your leftist moves in bafflegab and bullshit, and save the big ones for after you’ve solidly entrenched yourself, not run them up the flagpole right out of the box.
The Clintons (those laughable political geniuses) calculated that they would only be able to pass the big stuff like nationalized medicine in the opening honeymoon phase. It was a miscalculation that actually saved his presidency, such as it was, because it gave him GOP restraints that actually forced him into a fairly decent performance run.
