Iranian grain ship seized as Somali pirates hold world to ransom - Times Online
The Foreign Minister of Saudi Arabia, the owner of the ship, condemned the hijacking as an “outrageous act” that required international action.
“Piracy, like terrorism, is a disease which is against everybody, and everybody must address it together,” Prince Saud al-Faisal said.
Yeah. By getting together and demanding that the US military do something.
This will be one case where I hope Obama stays true to his anti-war roots, and tells them to fark off.

Word up to the Shoddy Arabian F.M. - maybe you could hire these guys…they’ve already got a small army and an air “arm”; I’m sure they’d be willing to set up a “marine security” operation - for a certain consideration, of course…
Good ol’ American free-enterprise doesn’t come free, y’know.
That international enough for you?
J.S., I believe I saw a story on either Fox or thru Insty’s site that they are in the process of forming one.
ISN’T IT ABOUT TIME SOME OF THESE COUNTRIES GREW SOME TESTIES AND BLEW THE BASTARDS OUT OF THE WATER? I AM BEGINNING TO THINK THAT ENTIRE CONTINENT SHOULD BE NAPALMED(OR NUKED)!
At least the Indians still know how piracy is supposed to be handled. What freaks me out is that it took this long for the Somalis to get a proper lesson in “stay the f*ck away from Naval vessels”. No actual pirate on the seas should be even a quarter of a match for a naval frigate, much less a destroyer or light cruiser. If they are, then they’re not pirates, they’re some government’s catspaws.
If I understand the “legal” thinking here, the “great” powers are unable to use force against these half-a$$ pirates because if captured they’d be tried under Sharia law. Ok fine. Sounds like they can’t do much of anything down there, so…

So Bill, where do I sign up for those web ad thingies?
Put a bounty on the pirates, and start selling the shippers 20mm cannons and some light obsolete ship-to-ship missiles - they don’t need the good stuff for pirates. Light armaments and employment opportunities for ex-Navy gunners sounds good to me. If the shippers need some political cover, offer them letters of marque. This would be a great way to get some of these guys back to shipping under the US flag.

Indian Navy sinks pirate mothership during bold stand-off in Gulf of Aden - Times Online
I’m seeing this meme floated more and more by Europenises and other lefty bleeding hearts. For instance, from the cite in my post:
In short, the same tired old left-wing “root causes” arguments that led to attempts to bribe the black community not to burn down their own inner-city neighborhoods.
And - oh, yeah, what else - this is the fault of the evil US government - in case we need to demand that “the parties responsible” deploy military force when the root causes arguments fail, as they always do.
One final thought: Do you suspect that the US Marines might be one outfit that wouldn’t feel helpless when confronted by Muslim pirates?
Cannons and missiles aren’t needed. A battery of .50 caliber machine guns can sink the small craft the pirates are using. They’re cheap to feed, require little maintenance, and training ship’s crew to use them would be much simpler than any of the modern electronic stuff.
That’s all probably so, John Stephens, but I don’t want to generate all these inconvenient situations where our dear sweet lawyers have to get all bothered about human rights, asylum, and other such critically important issues. Appropriate weapon selection should prevent any such distressing situations from arising, and will also benefit the poor, endangered shark populations of the East African coastal littoral. It’s a win-win.
Why would I think that?
No reason whatsoever to think that Marines might know how to handle pirates and their protectors.
