US Admiral ’stunned’ by pirates’ reach
“I’m stunned by the range of it, less so than I am the size,” Mullen said of the seizure of the Sirius Star Sunday by armed men.
I don’t suppose putting some 20 mm cannon on the tankers is an option?
I mean, given that there is never a cop around when you actually need one.

Perhaps I’m overly cynical, but given that (according to news reports) the Saudi tanker was not using normal shipping lanes where American and British warships patrol, and that the price of oil/gas has been dropping of late, I do wonder if there was some collusion here with the pirates in an effort to drive the price back up. If a few oil tankers got intercepted, it would perhaps help the budgets of certain royal families…
Here’s a suggestion: Put heavily armed marines on some civilian ships.
Britain continues to sink below the waves, not because the seas are rising, but because they’re being borne down by the sheer weight of their own legalistic cowardice. Here’s my advice - don’t capture any pirates. “Sorry, they all drowned. Terrible shame, terrible.”
Then again, we’ve already de facto modified the Geneva Conventions so that it’s not OK to summarily execute terrorists. Why shouldn’t we expect pirates to walk back into our oh-so-modern, oh-so-enlightened world through that wide open door? Who’s next, slavers? Cannibals?
This is the true price of pacifism and multiculturalism. When good people are prohibited by their own laws and morals from destroying evil, there is no other possibility but that evil will prosper.
The proper answers to piracy remain what they always were. “Millions for defense, not one cent for tribute” and “Neca eos omnes, Deus suos agnoscet.”
Bill, Bill, Bill… Violence will not solve anything. When you see pirates, the best thing to do is call 911 and wait until the police arrive and submit to the Pirates’ will, lest you anger them into harming you more.
Besides, make your boat a “Gun Free Zone” and you’ll have nothing to worry about.

In the city: When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.
In the ocean: When minutes count, the coast guard is only hours away.
At least the Indians still know how piracy is supposed to be handled. What freaks me out is that it took this long for the Somalis to get a proper lesson in “stay the f*ck away from Naval vessels”. No actual pirate on the seas should be even a quarter of a match for a naval frigate, much less a destroyer or light cruiser. If they are, then they’re not pirates, they’re some government’s catspaws.
