AoSHQ: Good Lord: Woman Falls for Nigerian Email Scam to the Tune of $400,000
Don’t feel bad for her. Feel bad for her husband. It was his retirement account she squandered — even after being repeatedly informed it was a scam and she needed to stop sending money.
An Oregon woman who is out $400,000 after falling for a well-known Internet scam says she wasn’t a sucker or an easy mark.
Janella Spears of Sweet Home says she simply became curious when she received an e-mail promising her $20.5 million if she would only help out a long-lost relative identified as J.B. Spears with a little money up front.
Spears told KATU-TV about the scammers’ ability to identify her relative by name was persuasive.
“That’s what got me to believe it,” She said. “So, why wouldn’t you send over $100?”
Here’s an update Ms. Spears - you not only are a sucker and an easy mark, you now define “sucker and easy mark.” Hope your dreams of ill-gotten millions comfort you as you contemplate the ruins of your future and your husband’s retirement fund.
If you ever wonder why you get bombarded with these Nigerian scams, people like Janella Spears are the reason. They only have to hit the jackpot once per billion emails they send, and Mr. Spears’s retirement account has now gone to fund another few billion scam spams.

Ms. Spears clearly qualifies for a government bailout. After all, is she any more ignorant than the bankers?
Fixed it for ya.
Thanks, in retrospect it should have been “bankers and borrowers”.
Oh, come now. Where was her husband while all this was going on? Sitting back and murmuring “No, no, no”?
Really?? Sure seems like pretty easy pickin’s to me…
That kind of “curiosity” reminds me of the guy running the punch press who couldn’t get it to work one day - so he stuck his head under the punch and wiggled the handle, to see if he could see the problem…
Having lived long enough to have seen people do some pretty outstandingly slow-headed stuff, the only thing about somebody like Janella that perplexes me is this: How can someone that stupid remember to keep on breathing?
If ever there was anyone who had justifiable grounds for a .45-caliber instant divorce decree, I’d say Mr. Spears would qualify.
Oh, well, it’s only money, right? Plenty more where that 400 big ones came from…
