Vetting of Hillary Rodham Clinton for Secretary of State Includes Look at Bill Clinton - NYTimes.com

WASHINGTON — President-elect Barack Obama’s advisers have begun reviewing former President Bill Clinton’s finances and activities to see whether they would preclude the appointment of his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, as secretary of state, Democrats close to the situation said Sunday.

The examination of the former president suggests how seriously Mr. Obama is considering bringing his onetime rival for the Democratic presidential nomination into his cabinet. He met with Mrs. Clinton in Chicago on Thursday to talk about the prospect and word quickly filtered out. Many Democrats close to both camps said Sunday that it seemed likely that Mr. Obama would ask her to take the job, assuming they could work something out regarding Mr. Clinton’s role.

I think this is all bull, just more of the smoke and mirrors designed to make Obama seem serious in his offer to Hillary Clinton. As I have noted previously, the only circumstance I can imagine in which Hillary accepts a cabinet position in Obama’s administration is if she has decided she has no further desire to seek the Presidency.

Admitted, her current situation is actually more dire than most folks understand, as far as a new run for the White House goes. The calculus for her is this: If Obama is successful, he will be re-nominated four years from now. If he is so unsuccessful as to not be re-nominated, it is highly dubious that Hillary can grab the nomination and be elected to succeed him.

In either event, it will be eight years before she can make a potentially successful run for the White House, but even in that case, her chances are slim. First, the American people almost never put the same party in charge of the Oval Office three terms running - GHWB managed to spin out the Reagan string, but he was following in the footsteps of one of the most popular presidents in modern history. Second, and speaking of Reagan, Hillary will be 69 in 2012. Only one other President was that old on election - Reagan himself. And no matter what happens in the next eight years, I can’t imagine anything that would give the immensely polarizing Clintons anything like Reagan’s popularity.

There’s another subtext at work here as well - Hillary came out of her failed campaign with a lot of debt, some of it personal. The Clintons like losing money about as well as they like losing blood. Obama came out of his campaign swimming in cash. It isn’t hard to imaging a deal wherein Hillary swears off her prexy ambitions, joins the Obama cabinet, helps to heal the breach in the Dem party, and in return she gets a Supreme Court post down the road, as well as yet another Obama bailout on her campaign debts.

So I guess I’m divided. Either this is an Obama game, or Hillary and Bill are hanging up their spurs in terms of going back to Pennsylvania Avenue.

Which way do you think it’s going?
