I just dropped my absentee ballot in the mail box. After waffling around, first saying I wouldn’t vote for John McCain, then saying I would, I ended up voting for Bob Barr. Not because I think he has any chance of winning, or even because I think he’d be a great president - although he would certainly be a much better one than either of the two major candidates.
I voted for him because it was the only way I could think of to get my libertarian/conservative preference on the official record, in hopes that the GOP might see what it had thrown away with its nomination of McCain, and its general move away from conservative and libertarian principles.
I guess I ended up being convinced by my own arguments.

If I thought McCain had a chance in hell of winning California, well, no, in that case he’d be winning in a landslide and I could still vote Libertarian. In other words, my vote in California will have absolutely zero impact on the election, so I might as well send a message. Thanks, Bill, for clarifying that for me.
Interesting times ahead.
I can think of one way in which California votes might matter: in the national vote totals, which played such a big role in the post-election political climate in the 2000 race.
As for voting for either Obama or McCain, in that case you are sending either a Socialist or a Shit Sandwich out to destroy the conservative movement in the GOP. Just thought I’d clarify that for you as well.
The only reason I’ve heard that anyone is voting for McCain is because “he’s not as bad as Obama.” That’s not good enough for me. Slap the Republicans around until they understand that if they don’t nominate an actual fiscal conservative that believes in free markets, they LOSE.
Bob Barr for me.

Strangely enough, I know multiple regular Dem voters who are refusing to vote Obama like I’m refusing to vote McCain. I’ve convinced them to vote Barr over McCain.
The silent majority will be voting for Bob Barr.
And once again the silent majority will lose, regardless of who wins this race between the statist/socialist and the communist/socialist.
