Conservative Democrats Peeling Away From Obama
Obama’s support from Republicans over this period also dipped from 9% to 7%, while 42% to 43% of independents have consistently supported him.
43% of independents would support a goat wearing a clown suit, as long as it came with a Democrat label.

Between his aggressive pursuit of anything in a skirt and that big, fake-looking nose, does Bubba Clinton qualify as a goat in a clown suit?
Personally, I always thought of The Great Prevaricator as a clown in a goat suit, but YMMV…
Based on personal observation, approximately 86% (or quite possibly more) of potential voters who self-identify as “independent” are sufficiently willfully ignorant regarding what candidates for POTUS actually say about most things (regardless of what said candidates may be considered likely to actually do about most things), that they will support anyone who, rumor has it, is “the best one for the job.”
For their vote, all you need to do, therefore, is to make sure the latest rumor runs your way - and the Democrats seem to have about equal success with that of the ‘Publicans when it comes to rumor control.
All part of what makes national politics in America so much fun to watch, most of the time…
I’m independent politically, but it’s in the “a pox on all their houses” sense.
More generally, I don’t much care for political parties. I don’t like the short-circuiting of electoral thought they encourage, nor the party discipline which can keep a representative from voting as he and his constituents would wish. I this I’m with George Washington, whose farewell address still has much relevance.
The only political party I might join is the one in Simon R Green’s Hawk and Fisher stories. The No Tax On Alcohol Party AKA the Let’s Party Party.
I don’t know, genes, the Monster Raving Loony party might work better.
