New tracking method shows higher rate of HIV
The new estimate does not mean the disease is spreading faster than before - in fact, the CDC numbers suggest the spread of the disease has been stable for years. Nevertheless, CDC officials and patient advocates said they hope the revelation of the higher rate will recapture the attention of the public and policymakers on the scope of the scourge and the need for renewed attention, increased resources and new strategies for combatting HIV/AIDS.
Nothing’s changed, in fact, things seem to be getting better, so give us more money because…well, just because.

I enjoy reading, or hearing about a story from multiple sources, just to judge the reporting. NPR spun this one yesterday with an emphasis on how the situation is so much worse than we originally thought, since CDC revised its estimate of cases upwards of 40%, with minor mention of the stabilizing data, and saying we have to do a better job with the African American community. The SF article you linked pushes the “give us more money” meme. Todays Washington Post, emphasizes the “We’re doing a good job” narrative, since the policies implemented are having a positive effect:
So, depending on the reporting, different narratives from the same source of data. As you’ve said before, how about reporting the information, more 5 W’s and an H, and let the reader decide how to interpret the data, rather than finding an angle that tells us what it all means. Minimally, people should be taught how to read a newspaper article with a greater emphasis on critical thinking.
IIRC the AssPress article I saw stressed the fact that for years the CDC data was wrong and that the Bush WH policy of abstinence made things worse. I question the formula they use(always a good idea when dealing with the CDC) to estimate when the people were infected. As we see with the climate BS, bad formulas give bad predictions and estimates.
Timing of some kinds of press releases should always be suspect. Will their budget be up for vote when Queen Nancy resumes command?
