I think you’re on to something, Bill. And you may have managed to reconcile the views of supporters and detractors. Supporters of socialism and Communism maintain, as noted above, that they’ll work if done right. Detractors maintain that neither system will ever work if human beings are involved.
Me, I agree that Communism has never been tried properly. Marx claimed that society moves through stages, ending up in a leaderless Communism of its own accord. I don’t know of any avowedly Communistic nations that just happened; they all hopped over steps of the progression by violent means. Perhaps the leaders of the revolutions truly believed that Communism would be heaven on earth and wanted to hurry it along. Or maybe they wanted power for themselves and used Communism as a convenient excuse. Given that approximately 0% of successful Communistic revolutionaries voluntarily gave up the power they’d seized, I conclude it’s the latter. Which ties into my original point about it never having been done properly.
Is there any evidence that society moves through stages in the way that Marx described? Besides those which could be described at the time Marx lived (ie, they had already happened)? It seems to me that Marx’s predictive power left much to be desired…

Marx promised Utopia. He just never promised how many would be left to see it.
What I find funny is that, though these people aren’t fit to treat, I’m sure they’re still fit to tax.
