Pakistan’s Bhutto assassinated at rally - Yahoo! News

This is huge news. What it indicates to me is that the Sunni Islamofascists have opened a new front in the War on Terror. Americans, dazed and confused by the endless anti-Bush propaganda storm emanating from the liberal mainstream media, have managed to convince themselves in large part that there really isn’t a war against terror going on. Sadly, the Islamofascists, both Sunni and Shia, don’t agree.

In Iraq, the Sunni have lost to the Shia. But they remain strong elsewhere - financed and supported by Saudi Arabia and others. Both Sunni and Shia want the US out of the Muslim world. And both believe that if they create enough chaos, they can drive the US out. In Iraq, the great prize was the oil fields. In Pakistan, an even greater prize awaits: a nuclear arsenal.

Yes, there are probably fail-safes, but nobody can be certain if they would work. Musharraf, under tremendous pressure from the Bush administration to attack al-Qaeda and the Taliban in their Waziristan strongholds, as well as to move towards Bush’s all-purpose balm, democracy, will now be entirely focused on his own survival.

An interesting question: Will Musharraf decide that his own survival necessitates the crushing of the Sunni Islamofascists in Waziristan?

More later.

UPDATE:  Jules Crittenden » Bhutto Assassinated

No good answers to any of that yet. I have a very bad feeling about all of this. The potential for critically destablizing a flank that was difficult enough as it was, is huge. I’d feel slightly better if Rumsfeld had doubled the size of the Army, and wish Bush and Congress would crank that up. This war is far from over. This war is no artificial Bush creation or figment of anyone’s imagination, and should still be very much part of our own election, wishful thinking notwithstanding.

Yes, my thoughts exactly. By the way, al-Qaeda is claiming responsibility for the assassination. My hunch is we go straight to martial law from here.
