Of Course He Has No Personal Axe To Grind….

My Way News - Ex-General: Iraq a ‘Nightmare’ for US

Sanchez went on to offer a pessimistic view on the current U.S. strategy against extremists will make lasting gains, but said a full-scale withdrawal also was not an option.

“The American military finds itself in an intractable situation … America has no choice but to continue our efforts in Iraq,” said Sanchez, who works as a consultant training U.S. generals.

Not for long, I hope.

MAJOR UPDATE (Hat tip - SDN): Apparently the liberal MSM reporting of the General’s speech cherry-picked a few sentences from a major address and ignored everything that didn’t suit the agenda it was trying to push. Hence, a speech that opened with:

IN SOME CASES I HAVE NEVER EVEN MET YOU, YET YOU FEEL QUALIFIED TO MAKE CHARACTER JUDGMENTS THAT ARE COMMUNICATED TO THE WORLD. MY EXPERIENCE IS NOT UNIQUE AND WE CAN FIND OTHER EXAMPLES SUCH AS THE TREATMENT OF SECRETARY BROWN DURING KATRINA. THIS IS THE WORST DISPLAY OF JOURNALISM IMAGINABLE BY THOSE OF US THAT ARE BOUND BY A STRICT VALUE SYSTEM OF SELFLESS SERVICE, HONOR AND INTEGRITY. ALMOST INVARIABLY, MY PERCEPTION IS THAT THE SENSATIONALISTIC VALUE OF THESE ASSESSMENTS IS WHAT PROVIDED THE EDGE THAT YOU SEEK FOR SELF AGRANDIZEMENT OR TO ADVANCE YOUR INDIVIDUAL QUEST FOR GETTING ON THE FRONT PAGE WITH YOUR STORIES! AS I UNDERSTAND IT, YOUR MEASURE OF WORTH IS HOW MANY FRONT PAGE STORIES YOU HAVE WRITTEN AND UNFORTUNATELY SOME OF YOU WILL COMPROMISE YOUR INTEGRITY AND DISPLAY QUESTIONABLE ETHICS AS YOU SEEK TO KEEP AMERICA INFORMED. THIS IS MUCH LIKE THE INTELLIGENCE ANALYSTS WHOSE EFFECTIVENESS WAS MEASURED BY THE NUMBER OF INTELLIGENCE REPORTS HE PRODUCED. FOR SOME, IT SEEMS THAT AS LONG AS YOU GET A FRONT PAGE STORY THERE IS LITTLE OR NO REGARD FOR THE “COLLATERAL DAMAGE” YOU WILL CAUSE. PERSONAL REPUTATIONS HAVE NO VALUE AND YOU REPORT WITH TOTAL IMPUNITY AND ARE RARELY HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR UNETHICAL CONDUCT.

GIVEN THE NEAR INSTANTANEOUS ABILITY TO REPORT ACTIONS ON THE GROUND, THE RESPONSIBILITY TO ACCURATELY AND TRUTHFULLY REPORT TAKES ON AN UNPRECEDENTED IMPORTANCE. THE SPECULATIVE AND OFTEN UNINFORMED INITIAL REPORTING THAT CHARACTERIZES OUR MEDIA APPEARS TO BE RAPIDLY BECOMING THE STANDARD OF THE INDUSTRY.

The general continues at length with his excoriation of the MSM’s slanted, biased, agenda-driven, distorted and dishonest reporting. Not a word of this reached any of the MSM’s reporting of the General’s address that I have seen, which only further underlines and confirms his anger with the liberal mainstream media.

Ace offers further evidence of the duplicity of the MSM:

The Deciders Have Decided, Lt. General Ricardo Sanchez (US Army, Ret) About to Become Darling of the Left

So they finally get to the part where he says we have to stay (and who is reading that far down anyway?) but they team it up with the ‘intractable situation’ line. And I do mean team them up. If you look at the transcript those two sentences are two paragraphs apart but the AP cuts and pastes and makes up a new one out of whole cloth.

Deciders!

No, liars - by cut-n-paste, omission, commission, and intention.

I spend a lot of time on this blog exposing and denouncing the crimes against honest journalism that have become the liberal-left media’s stock in trade, but I have to confess the bald-faced dishonesty of this initial report took me by surprise. We have certainly seen other retired generals abruptly unload on Bush or Rumsfeld or both, for reasons either easy (self-interest) or hard (pentagon turf wars) to decipher. But this is an example of the Big Lie favored by the fascist propagandists of Nazi Germany. Ironic - no, make that disgusting and depressing - that its latest practitioners make their home in the liberal American media. (all via Glenn Reynolds).
