Embrace and Extend

There’ve been quite a few apologias for Hugo Chávez in the ‘progressive’ wings of the Western media, especially among the more emetic leftists that infest the Guardian and Independent. If ever any evidence of Venezuela’s incipient slide into outright totalitarianism were needed, it is amply supplied by this latest. Chávez is threatening to take under state control any independent school that does not cleave to his nightmarish ‘Bolivarian’ dictates. They will effectively be abolished for being counter-revolutionary elements. Am I indulging in hyperbole in wondering when the first firing squads will be set up?
