“Today’s half-baked cover-up attempt by the Romney campaign does not even pass the laugh test. The Romney campaign has paid Warren Tompkins and his various firms hundreds of thousands of dollars. Wesley Donehue works for Tompkins and is listed on Tompkins’ own webpage as an associate of the firm. According to PalmettoScoop.com, Donehue ‘runs the daily operations of their political consulting firm, Tompkins, Thompson and Sullivan, including direct mail efforts and a number of Web-based ventures.’

“There is no room in our party for this kind of smut. As the top executive of his own campaign, Gov. Romney should take full responsibility for this type of high-tech gutter politics and issue an immediate apology. In addition, Gov. Romney should exercise some of his much-touted executive acumen, take control of his flailing campaign, and immediately terminate anyone and everyone related to this outrage.

“This latest episode only serves to prove what many voters are already figuring out: Mitt Romney will do anything, say anything, smear any opponent and flip flop on any position in order to win. The American people in general and the Republican Party in particular deserve better than this.”

As I said elsewhere, that “coincidence” excuse sounded lame as hell to me.

    Actually, I can easily picture it as being more the consequence of the same technological cluelessness that brought us the Rathergate memo.

    “Hey, look at this. Click click click click and now I have a nice little anti-Thompson web site. Think the boss’ll like it?”

    “Hmmm. Looks like you need some better jabs. Have fun if you want, but don’t tell the boss. And you’d better hope it never gets traced back to you.”

    “How can it? It’s got its own site name and everything. Completely anonymous. Hey, it’s racked up quite a few hits already!”

    “How long has it been out there?”

    “Couple days.”

    “Well, just as long as you’re careful. Where are you hosting it?”

    “What do you mean?”

    “The disk storage for the web pages. It’s got to sit somewhere.”

    “Oh, there’s plenty of free space on Drive F.”

    “Drive F? I’ve never heard of them.”

    “Huh? Oh, it’s not an ISP. The F drive on the file server.”

    “WHAT? You put it on the F drive?”

    “Sure. What’s the big deal? It’s got hundreds of free gigabytes, and the whole site only takes up a few K.”

    “But that points straight at us, you idiot!”

    “Relax, there’s nothing to worry about. I told you, I was really careful. That’s the beauty of the internet: Once you click ‘publish,’ it’s just floating around out there on the web, perfectly anonymous.”

    This cluelessness is a little more likely, though:

    “Hey, we’re running a fuckin’ Presidential campaign here, you think we got time to listen to you bitch? What is your fuckin’ problem? Composition? Done. Design? Done. You think I’m gonna ask you about political strategy? I’m a professional, you asshole. Some of the best experts in the field drew this baby up, we don’t need your help on that. It’s ready to go, we got a schedule to meet, all kinds of irons in the fire, and now I gotta hear this fuckin’ techie bullshit about ‘lead time’? Here’s the URL we want. Just get it out there on the web, tonight, or we get us a new electron pusher around here. You people are a dime a dozen.”
