WASHINGTON - Chuck Hagel will announce Monday that he is retiring from the U.S. Senate and will not run for president next year, people close to the Nebraska Republican said Friday.
I think his pro-amnesty-open borders-illegal immigration stands caught up with him at last.
The RNC worries when these sterling examples of the RINO creed figure out they have made themselves unelectable and exit, stage very left, but I don’t. It means they are irrevocably gone, and so we don’t have to fight the national GOP as well as the left to get a real Republican into the race.

this is going to be one of the worst election cycles for our party in my forty-five years. it’s good that we are purging, but it’s bad that it’s coming at a time when we’re not in the best position to purge.
morgant, from the average machine pol viewpoint, it is never a good time to purge.
I think the GOP’s only hope this cycle is to repudiate the old biz-as-usual GOP and start fresh.
If the GOP runs on its “record,” it is, as you say, doomed. Hegel is an example of everything that is wrong with the party. Once again, I say, good riddance.
I would add this: I do think further ahead than the next election. I stayed home in 2006, and urged others to do likewise. The results were better than I expected. While the DemCong took control of both houses, it was by a small enough margin that they were mostly stymied by the GOP members - which meant that the Dems have to shoulder a large part of the blame for whatever ills they claim occurred since 2006. Then, the whacking that the GOP took over the Bush-McCain amnesty taught the entire party a lesson, which we see in the sharply revised positions on illegal immigration all of the major candidates now espouse.
I will back Fred Thompson to the hilt in this election, but if Hillary wins, that means the Dems will be in charge when the economy crashes, Iraq explodes, and Iran gets the bomb, because Dem policy will do nothing to prevent all three. That might be enough to destroy the Dems for a generation, and give us Thompson, or somebody like him, along with a big GOP majority, in 2012.
But I’d like to win this one big in 2008, if we can.
Then, the whacking that the GOP took over the Bush-McCain amnesty taught the entire party a lesson,…
Maybe.
There’s still about 14 months or so left for them to try again…
Yes, I’m a bit dubious that they got the message as well, sure some did, but some are still plotting in the back rooms, with the Dems, on ways to slip it past us on a future date. They’ve got more votes now too, as Hagel and Warner (though I don’t recall his position on it last time at the moment) won’t care what anyone says.
Bill, the main problem with that would be that the economy crashes, Iraq explodes, and Iran gets the bomb.
I prefer my victories to not be pyrrhic.
The economy is going to crash anyway. You can’t go on a credit binge without a hangover.
Iraq won’t explode unless we withdraw precipitously and prematurely, and even Hillary is smart enough to know that. She won’t want it to happen on her first term or there won’t be a second term.
If Iran gets a 10 kiloton atomic bomb and uses it, the Israelis (the probable first target) will likely respond with a couple dozen of their own. If America is the target, Iran will learn the difference between their atomic bomb and the thermonuclear bomb, which uses a fission bomb similar to what they made, as a trigger.
If you live long enough, the warnings of impending doom get old. Four or even eight years of another Clinton isn’t going to mean the end of the world. Who knows, Hillary might even demonstrate that she has bigger cojones than her husband.
I’d just about bet so. Instead of dumping him, she has dragged him around by his nose hairs.
I think the only lesson the RINO candidates have learned is to not flaunt their pro-sellout stance. They are still not stating what they would do to the solve the problem with resorting to smoke and mirror techniques.
…
withwithout resorting…Try reading for comprehension. I’d rather see Fred elected, and with majorities in Congress - not least because we might be able to head off these things. But if Hillary is elected, they are dead certainties, and they will hurt the Dems far more than the GOP.
My mistake. I’d like to win this one too, though I’m still not sure the GOP has pulled its head out of its collective ass.
I still remember being so damn optimistic in 2001, and even in 2002 and 2003.
