Fighting the plague
June 30th 2007 General

In addition to the two car bombs found in London, we’re getting reports of a blazing car being driven into the terminal at Glasgow airport, and police arresting two men of ‘Asian’ appearance (recall that in the UK, Asian means Indian subcontinent). If this does turn out to be another case of attempted Jihad, then it is very worrying. The fact that the current crop of Rage Boys thus far seem to be incompetent morons is not at all comforting. Tom Cohoe in a comment likened these animals to plague bacteria: lower life forms to be sure, but still capable of inflicting great suffering. I’d take the analogy a bit further. Every time one of these muppets fails to detonate his bomb or gets lifted by the police, his failure is analysed and used to refine techniques. It’s like bacteria developing antibiotic resistance. And sooner or later we are going to have something like 7/7 or worse (if the bomb in the Haymarket had gone off the carnage could have been phenomenal). As the IRA said after the Brighton hotel bombing which came close to killing Margaret Thatcher: we only have to be lucky once. You have to be lucky all the time.
