Iran’s secret plan for summer offensive to force US out of Iraq | The Guardian | Guardian Unlimited
Iran is secretly forging ties with al-Qaida elements and Sunni Arab militias in Iraq in preparation for a summer showdown with coalition forces intended to tip a wavering US Congress into voting for full military withdrawal, US officials say.“Iran is fighting a proxy war in Iraq and it’s a very dangerous course for them to be following. They are already committing daily acts of war against US and British forces,” a senior US official in Baghdad warned. “They [Iran] are behind a lot of high-profile attacks meant to undermine US will and British will, such as the rocket attacks on Basra palace and the Green Zone [in Baghdad]. The attacks are directed by the Revolutionary Guard who are connected right to the top [of the Iranian government].”
What danger for Iran?
What, precisely, is President 34% Mad-For-Amnesty Bush going to do to stop them? My guess? Exactly what he has already done.
What’s most interesting - and disgusting, and depressing, and disheartening - about reports like these is they demonstrate that the US government at the highest levels (well, one hopes - whether Bush actually is aware of something is always a chancy proposition) knows that Iran is killing our soldiers, publicly admits it, and yet has done nothing effective to stop them from doing it.

Perhaps this is a reason to hold one’s nose and vote for the lesser of two evils in 2008. That is, it’s pretty clear that the current administration won’t be taking any meaningful action against Iran (or at most it won’t do anything signficant until after the election). The next President will at least have the luxury of not having the baggage of the current problems in Iraq. Basically, he (or Hillary, god help us) would be able to say something like, “well, I didn’t start this mess, but unfortunately recent events have forced my hand, and action needs to be taken against Iran. For those who don’t approve, you can blame W.” Sort of like what Nixon said when he bombed Cambodia.
As things stand right now, I plan on sitting out the next election, but I’ll have to see how events unfold before I make up my mind.
